Fall has Arrived! If you havnet stocked up on firewood now is the time! Check out Swoope Station s products page and order yours today!

Today our blog post is a bit of a myth buster . So growing up my family has always burnt wood to stay toasty and warm all winter long and now as an adult my husband supplies firewood to Augusta County and the surrounding areas.

He and I have heard many wives tales, interesting terms, and jargon associated with wood burning as we have met some equally interesting folks!

First and foremost...Saftey is a top priority always be sure to have your chimney cleaned and inspected by a professional ! Be sure to use cut wood that has been sitting for 6 months to a year ; this wood will have a low moisture content. Do not burn artificially packaged logs in your fireplace or your woodstove, since they leave a large amount of creosote deposits, just as green wood or wood with higher moisture content does.

That being said lets get down to the topic.. Wives tales .. one that could that help keep creosote From building up , which is paramount when trying to prevent chimeny fire fires!

For anyone who's a novice to the wood burning scene creosote is a term used for the thick tar like resin that is created when wood is burnt and the smoke condenses in the chimeny or pipes.

So if your family was put in a position where you couldnt order wood from my husband , Robby at Swoope Tree and Firewood Service (540)430 6068

and perhaps you had to order from someone who thinks they can make a quick profit

And they sold you wood that wasn't seasoned properly..so now instead of the typical one time a year cleaning your chimeny you are forced to $$ pay to have it cleaned twice or more! 😳

The wives tale i looked into pertainined to this topic and claims to keep creosote from building up!

Throw the skins from your potatoes in the fire ... potato skins or orange peels!

We heard both orange 🍊 peels or potato skins... never both . So I researched both to see what i could find out and last winter with some help from some wood burning patrons did a little firld experiement testing both old wives tales!

Tested orange peels and potato skins ..

RESULTS ARE IN...

just throw the orange peels in the trash not the fire!!!!! Bonnie from hermitage va tried out orange peels notcied no change in the amount of build up at the end of the season!

Barb and Carl of Staunton va tested out potato skins and noticed less cresote build up as whole.

Thanks to both families for participating! My research online concurs with the field experiment as well i have attached some of those links for anyone who is interested!

Thanks for reading my blog and have a wonderful day
